(174) Rain Men

At lunchtime on January 23rd 2001 I leant my forehead against my wife's whilst seated at the computer.
This unusual gesture, one I had never made to her before, reminded me of the scene from the end of the film Rain Man where the autistic character played by Dustin Hoffman achieves a communication of affection with his normal brother, played by Tom Cruise. 
I did not mention to her that it had put me in mind of that.

That afternoon she went out and returned with five videos which she had bought as there was a bargain offer on at a store where one could buy five for £20. One of them was Rain Man.
She had never mentioned before obtaining it.

(166) Paula Yates and family and friends. And from the Third to the Fourth

( AMPLIFY ING the above article will make it easier to read.) I first met Fiona in March 1994, marrying her in December 1995 and hence moving to Hastings. I noted that a lot of her arty friends and neighbours had children with unusual names. Judy Neate had a son called Bingo, and Alistair Fairley a son called Paris and a daughter called Carson. Laetitia Yhap had a son called Ajax and Craig Sams a grandson called Mars. (293) Learning via Krabbé`s site of Salvioli´s pawn break and then encountering it

I gave chess lessons via Skype to a Mancunian girl, Bryony Eccleston. Her mother had requested I teach something about endings so, over the previous couple of lessons, I had been working with her on pawn endings.  On April 29th 2020 I was trying to teach her about a rarely encountered tricky breakthrough in a pawn ending of the answering of...g5? with g4! by showing an example of it from a tournament game of 1978 in Kiev between GM Hans Ree  Hans Ree - Wikipedia  and IM Lyubomir Ftacnik.  Ľubomír Ftáčnik - Wikipedia Since I did not have my signed copy of Ree´s The Human Comedy of Chess in front of me, I had not arranged the pawns on the queenside precisely as they were in the actual game.  Ftacnik thought he was winning and played 56...g6-g5?? to be stunned by Ree's response of 57 g4!
